These years have marked a fundamental change not only in the way that Science has been progressively integrated in Europe (providing effective mechanisms for exchanging experiences and technologies between countries of northern and southern/western and eastern Europe), but also in the way European citizens and students have been progressively connected and integrated. We, as marine scientists, are well aware that oceans are the most interconnected ecosystem in the world and that European marine societies must play their role in this process of unification providing an important contribution in the field of marine science and technology.
EFMS does not aim to enter into competition for funding with other research institutions, but prefers to connect scientists and coordinate initiatives in order to create links between existing societies, and between marine science and public opinion and politics.
The objectives of the Federation are:
  • to contribute to the advancement of research and education in marine science and technology
  • to disseminate information to promote the advancement of marine science and technology in Europe.
For these purposes, the Federation undertakes:
  • to address jointly European issues of common interest
  • to make known the ideas and needs of its members
  • to promote the development of Marine Science and Technology
  • to promote the contribution of Marine Science and Technology to the European Union research programmes
  • to assist the European Union to obtain technical advice from the members of the Federation
  • to provide a permanent network among the Marines Science and Technology Societies and a common, but not unique, gateway to each of the Marine Science and Technology Societies and their national networks.
